(...continued from previous photo) We left our campsite at 3:45, and were pleased when we were able to secure seats on the first of the three busses waiting for passengers, which allowed our driver to leave as soon as it filled. Off we went into the dark, as the bus ascended the twisty road to Moraine Lake. Once we arrived at the parking lot, the bus driver told her passengers to head to the Rockpile Trail for the best sunrise spot for photos. Sunrise was still 45 minutes away, and I really wasn't interested in jockeying for position with a dozen other photographers on the namesake rockpile that is the site of perhaps the most photographed spot in Canada (think Maroon Lake in Colorado, except with far less space to set up), so as the driver was pointing us in the direction of the Rockpile trailhead, we told her we were heading up into Larch Valley for sunrise. She seemed surprised by this, as we were willingly heading up a wild trail in the dark where there was a very real possibility of coming face to face with a grizzly bear. We had already had a shot of morning adrenaline a few days before, when a grizzly sow and her two cubs strode by us a bit too close for comfort on the Hidden Lake Trail in Glacier National Park, but I really wanted to photograph from up in the valley at sunrise, so I decided we would take the risk. We didn't have bear bells or any kind of noise-making device with us, so I decided to open Spotify on my phone and play music instead. So off we went into the darkness, canister of bear spray on my hip, and "Falling Satellites" by English prog band Frost* blaring full volume from my phone. Music on the trail is one of my pet peeves, and I absolutely cringe when another hiker passes by with their playlist inflicting itself on everyone around them, but in grizzly country, alone, in the dark, it seemed to be a legitimate option.
