Cloud Shadows on Torreys Peak
Mount Sniktau Trail, Front Range, Colorado
Although the calendar said spring, after a series of powerful late-season storms passed through Colorado, the mountains rising high above Loveland Pass looked more like they were in the grip of winter. This image of Torreys Peak (14,272') is one I've photographed many times, but never with this much snow. If you look closely at Torreys right-hand ridgeline, you can see the very tip of nearby fourteener Grays Peak making an appearance. We hiked to the 13,239-foot summit of Mount Sniktau and were afforded these wonderful views for our efforts. The last two times we attempted to climb Sniktau, the wind was so fierce once we attained the long ridge leading to the peak that we literally could not stand up and were forced to retreat. (Imagine standing behind a jumbo jet as it takes off and you'll get a sense of the conditions.) This time the weather was perfect; almost no wind, and surprisingly warm for the altitude and the amount of snow covering the landscape.
