Mesa Arch Winter Sunrise
Canyonlands National Park, Utah
If this wasn't my first visit to Mesa Arch, it was certainly one of the first. I was on my way home from attending a large-format photography workshop in Death Valley and camped in the park during a snowstorm. When I awoke I headed straight to the parking lot in hopes of getting to the arch before anyone else in order to secure a prime spot for my tripod. Much to my despair there was one other car in the trailhead parking lot, and I followed a single set of tracks through the snow in the darkness. Inexplicably, as I neared the arch, that set of footprints kept right on going! I had the arch to myself as I set up my bulky 4x5 camera on my tripod and fired off a few sheets of film of this amazing scene, with only a set of rabbit tracks tracking through the fresh powder. My guess is, given the arch's position along the wall of the amphitheater below, the other person never saw it in the darkness and kept right on going. I never saw another person that morning, which is a far cry from conditions there in the Age of Instagram, where every morning dozens of photographers jockey for position. I've even heard of scuffles breaking out over prime spots. I'm happy to say I've been photographing the area so long that I have multiple fond memories of photographing here without another soul in sight. Photo © copyright by Todd Caudle.
