Is this a manipulated mirror image of a bend in the river? Surprisingly, no. This interesting geological feature is called an entrenched meander–here the San Juan River makes several extreme bends as it cuts through layers of rock. The sediment-laden water has been cutting this 1,000-foot-deep chasm for millions of years.
