Emerald Lake Snow
Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
An early season snowstorm turns the high basin of Emerald Lake into a winter wonderland in this unusual scene. It's near impossible to get snowy reflections because the high country lakes freeze if Mother Nature so much as gives a passing thought to winter, but in this mid-September scenario conditions were just right.
I left the trailhead before sunrise, and was disheartened to see one other photographer hit the trail in front of me. I really wasn't in the mood to share such special conditions with another photographer. I followed his tracks past Dream Lake, when they took an unexpected turn down towards a creek, never to be seen again. I was thankful to have this scene all to myself as the fog rolled in, obscuring the view of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain rising beyond.
Once the peaks were hidden in the fog, I retreated to Dream Lake, where there were actually bits of blue sky poking through the clouds. It didn't take long for conditions to change, however, and the weather pattern repeated itself at the lower lake.
