After a very exciting and fulfilling trek in Nepal, we returned to Colorado briefly, only to hop back on a plane and head to Switzerland after just one week at home, where I was able to lay eyes on the mountain that so captured my imagination as a young boy – the Matterhorn! In my pre-teen years I wrote a short story about running away from home, hitch-hiking across the West, and joining the merchant marines, where I sailed around the world, finally (somehow) ending up in landlocked Switzerland, where I set out to climb the Matterhorn. Such a climb is beyond me in this day and age, but it was quite a fantasy for a young boy who nurtured more than his fair share of fantasies growing up. While I might not have scaled the lofty 14,692-foot peak on this trip, seeing it in person, and photographing it from several angles, was truly a dream come true. We barely scratched the surface of what the Alps have to offer, and we look forward to an opportunity to return someday.
